Patricia St. John is one of the best authors of Worthy Books for kids. Not only are these books worthwhile but they are almost impossible to put down. Her books are not sickly sweet and they don’t necessarily have a terribly happy ending, but they are true to the scenario she is depicting and an honest reflection on life. I think it is the honesty and truth in her stories that makes you want to read them until they are finished – you just have to see how things turn out!!!

This book is about a young girl who, through many toils and trials carries her little brother across a country in Africa hoping to escape a war zone. She toils her way through many dangers and famine, totally reliant on herself. After an incredible journey limping along from one desolate village to the next they finally get to a refugee camp where they both suffer terrible illness. Far beyond what we would ever expect of our children, yet this is the “normal” for many kids in refugee torn lands. Will her family ever be reunited, will she ever get beyond this desperate survival? Gripping I tell you…

Wow, would I love to read that book! If my number doesn’t come up in the family drawing, I’ll have to find this book through Inter Library Loan. I’m not familiar with the author at all, but if this is a great novel that might help my college research students understand refugee life, I just might have my students next fall read this book for their book report, and research African issues for their semester topic.
