Sunday Snippet: Earth Day…And Treasures From Heaven…

April 23rd, 2012 · 3 Comments

When I was little, on my very first day of school we were taught a song so that we could join in with morning assembly the next day. I’ll never forget it… sitting on the floor with the smell of new crayons, in a tiny green speckled uniform, white socks and brown shoes. Every thing was new and fresh and fun… and this is what the song they taught us… especially appropriate for earth day.

Daisies are our silver, buttercups our gold,

This is all the treasure we can have or hold.

Raindrops are our diamonds, and the morning dew;

While for shining sapphires, we’ve the speedwell blue.

These shall be our emeralds, leaves so new and green;

Roses make the reddest, Rubies ever seen.

God, who gave these treasures, to your children small,

Teach us how to love them, and grow like them all.

Make us bright as silver, make us good as gold;

Warm as summer roses, Let our hearts unfold.

Gay as leaves in April, clear as drops of dew

God, who made the speedwell, keep us true to you.

I think that may well be the first hymn I ever knew off by heart and Isn’t it funny how first things stick in our hearts as treasures, and this one does indeed remind us that our treasures are from heaven.

    […] Replace Outings to the Mall with Adventures into the Great Outdoors. It is so easy to have a few errands at the mall become an entire morning of rumbling around the shops. We have found that the more outdoors we are the greener we want to be and a trip to the shops is the last thing we want to do as a family on a Saturday afternoon. We have replaced almost all mall shopping with outdoor ambles. If we claim we want to be green and preserve our wonderful world, then we need to get out there and enjoy it too. […]
