The Big Book Count…

We are having a getting everything done day today – energy is up, coffee has been drunk and we are good to get busy…

But first a little distraction… When my friend over at Playing by the Book challenged me on Twitter last night… And I can never resist a challenge!!! Here’s the chat, you have to read from the bottom up:

If we could guess the number of books we own to within 250 books either way then she would make a donation to Books Aid…

So first things first… this morning we set to counting… before the daily “taking all the books off the shelves” began… I started counting but realized very quickly that I had a problem with wanting to put books back in order, and put books on shelves elsewhere and perhaps donate one or ten… and I saw the whole day being spent on counting books. So I turned a blind eye and handed over the task to folks who are a little less concerned about order!!!

@playbythebook the great book count is on...

You can find our photos on our Instagram feed (se7en_hoods)…

@playbythebook and on and on...

Then I got my very professional counter in… armed with a calculator… a rare treat!!!

And these are the sums…

And this is what he came up with (I checked and double checked):

And our final answer was: 2832 We made it, we were 82 books off!!! And Playing by the book will be making a 5 Pound Donation!!! You are welcome to join her…

And I cannot believe how many books we own, firstly and secondly this is after donating heaps and heaps and heaps of them – clearly I need to be a lot more ruthless… I have to say a large portion or great theological tombs belonging to the father person and are untouchable… school books are untouchable, which leaves kids books and my books that need to take a wander out!!! You can see why we have become shoppers of kindle books – clearly there is just not enough space!!!

Next week we will be joining Playing by the Book again with her fabulous Edible Book Festival:

I know we are going to busy creating an edible book this weekend… but if inspiration hits then we would love you to play along with us!!!

  1. Hay Zoe, Couldn’t believe we made it!!! First I thought we had way under guessed… then we started counting and… I was getting really nervous that we wouldn’t make it to 2500… then I worried we would overstep the 3000. But we made it!!! Thanks for the donation – I so love it!!! Have a fabulous day!!!

  2. EGADS! You counted!

I have 8 bookcases full; and I just pulled a full 30 to donate (so I could actually put all the books on the shelves).

Makes me wonder how many we have. . .

  3. oh, my word!!! 2832 books???? WHERE do you put them all? I know your shelves are overflowing and there are shelves everywhere, but 2832??? WOW

  4. Christine… We did, we counted!!! We counted… We donate tons of books they are always going out… we reduced out kids books by more than half last year and we are still shrinking away!!! I actually thought we would have a whole lot more but was too terrified to say so!!! It is pretty bad though, At least they are all on shelves and neat enough – not squashed or double layers… but still I fear we may have to let a few more go. Great project for your guys… let them count the books and tell us what you find!!! Lots of love to you!!!

  5. Well Irene, Our shelves are not overflowing!!! But there are shelves everywhere!!! Turns out to be about 283 books per person, on average (I would never say the father persona owns a great chunk of them)… So why don’t you count how many books you have and see if you are above or below the “se7en” average!!! Happy counting!!!

  6. I’m going to have to count ours now: DH never ever gets rid of books. In fact he has so many he bought another house to put them all in 😀
Thanks for pointing me to the edible book. Annoyingly I made a Gruffalo Crumble and posted about it but don’t have any left to be able to do the ‘date’ picture.

  7. Hay Domestic Goddesque… Happy Counting, I never imagined how quickly the number of books added up… shelf by shelf by shelf…!!! I saw your Gruffalo Crumble and thought – hmmm edible book!!! You will indeed have to come up with something fresh!!! Hope you have a fun weekend!!!
