When you are an avid collector of Struik Nature Pocket Guides, then you will be excited to hear about their latest Pocket Guide: Birds of Botswana. This book is part of a series of Pocket Guides, and particularly Birds of Southern African countries Guides.

The book was written by Dominic Rollinson, who works as a guide for African Eco-tours, and was a co-author on the ever popular Sasol Birds of Southern Africa (5th Edition).

This is a handy field guide with over 360 species of birds, of Botswana, featured in the book. Each bird has a full colour photograph, a distribution map, the common name, scientific name, and the Setswana name, there is also a detailed description with special features of the bird, it’s habitat and of course, it’s status. Each species has it’s own description, carefully highlighting the features that would help to identify it.

As usual, with these Pocket Guides, it is the few pages in the introduction that contain all the gold. Where the National Parks are, the best places for spotting birds, and the different vegetation zones for different species of bird. The birds range from water birds to raptors, cuckoos to kingfishers, swallows to sunbirds.

Botswana is a destination for adventurous folk who are looking to discover African Wildlife, not only is it a country with a wide array of contrasts, from the arid Kalahari, to the rich wetlands of the Okavango. The Okavango, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where a large wetland fans into a delta, from the Okavango River. It is a fascinating spot and a birdwatcher’s dream. There is a lot packed into this Pocket Guide and it would be a great addition, in your backpack, for any adventure.
