Sunday Snippet: The Story of Stephen Lungu… Another Incredible Biography to GiveAway…

August 6th, 2012 · 10 Comments

Just recently we had a GiveAway, Out of the Black Shadows… the biography of Stephen Lungu… Little did I know that there was a youth version of the book about to launch. Here it is…

An amazing, amazing book… a must read teen book… I Maybe your kids aren’t going to sleep out in the street and maybe they aren’t going to join a violent gang… but there are times when all of us, for all our wealth and home comforts, feel desperate and I know that we all feel worthless and miserable at times. Well this is a book about a young man who really reached rock bottom and yet he rose above, not through his own strength but by the Grace of God – really. This book is packed with hope and encouragement for when you are feeling down.

Very early on in this book you read about how at age five his desperate young mother took him, his younger brother and baby sister to a shopping centre and left them there… in the hopes that someone would take them on. Totally rejected, unloved and angry… this little guy was not only terrified for himself, but had the weight of his siblings resting on his shoulders. This book would be hard for my younger kids to cope with on their own, Stephen Lungu really did have a tough life.

For my older kids this is a definite must read… They will definitely understand the book and the feelings in it. Not only will they be able to relate to it personally, but this book really does give a context to the vast number of street kids that we encounter in day to day living in Cape Town.

But a life changing event, when Stephen is twenty, turns his world around and he never looks back – there are huge life lessons in this book… I tell you I couldn’t put it down and it is firmly at the top of the pile of books my teens must read this week. In fact I think I am off to our supplier to buy more than a couple of copies myself – because this has just become my top teen book gift.

You can read more about Stephen Lungu in our previous post, and you can watch him tell his incredible story on this ten minute video.

This GiveAway works in the usual way, comment before the end of this coming Sunday, 12 August 2012, and we will draw and publish the winners next week! I won’t respond to your comments as I do on our other posts because I don’t want to be included in our own giveaway.

As usual I have to thank CBD, our GiveAway book suppliers of more great books.

This book sounds like a great addition to my older son’s reading list this year. We live in the suburbs, and I am striving to expose my boys to life outside of their “bubble”.

[…] I have reviewed this book before, the life of Stephen Lungu is quite an incredible one, and while this is the story of a child, who at age five, was left homeless, hungry and desperate, with two younger siblings to take care of… by his very desperate mother. I think of my five year old and shudder. This is a must read teen book, all of us have been there… no matter where we are from, where we have felt desperate and lonely and rock bottom. Not everyone will join a violent gang because of these feelings but a life changing event turned Stephen Lungu’s life around dramatically. Literally from grovelling in garbage bins for his next meal to a missionary and world renowned speaker working for Africa Enterprise International. This is definitely a must read book for teens. […]
