Sunday Snippet: The Story of Stephen Lungu… Another Incredible Biography to GiveAway…

Just recently we had a GiveAway, Out of the Black Shadows… the biography of Stephen Lungu… Little did I know that there was a youth version of the book about to launch. Here it is…

An amazing, amazing book… a must read teen book… I Maybe your kids aren’t going to sleep out in the street and maybe they aren’t going to join a violent gang… but there are times when all of us, for all our wealth and home comforts, feel desperate and I know that we all feel worthless and miserable at times. Well this is a book about a young man who really reached rock bottom and yet he rose above, not through his own strength but by the Grace of God – really. This book is packed with hope and encouragement for when you are feeling down.

Very early on in this book you read about how at age five his desperate young mother took him, his younger brother and baby sister to a shopping centre and left them there… in the hopes that someone would take them on. Totally rejected, unloved and angry… this little guy was not only terrified for himself, but had the weight of his siblings resting on his shoulders. This book would be hard for my younger kids to cope with on their own, Stephen Lungu really did have a tough life.

For my older kids this is a definite must read… They will definitely understand the book and the feelings in it. Not only will they be able to relate to it personally, but this book really does give a context to the vast number of street kids that we encounter in day to day living in Cape Town.

But a life changing event, when Stephen is twenty, turns his world around and he never looks back – there are huge life lessons in this book… I tell you I couldn’t put it down and it is firmly at the top of the pile of books my teens must read this week. In fact I think I am off to our supplier to buy more than a couple of copies myself – because this has just become my top teen book gift.
