If you have ever wanted to escape to the great outdoors then you would love to read Hippos, a Mongoose and Me by Karen Paolillo. Karen is that person, who through thick and thin, trials and tribulations, literally escaped to the wilds of Zimbabwe, where she founded the The Turgwe Hippo Trust.

When I read her first book, Hippo Love Story, I was absolutely entranced by her story. I learned more about hippo behaviour from reading her book than I ever could have imagined. I was intrigued and eager to learn more… and so thrilled when her new book launched: Hippos, a Mongoose and Me. More stories about the hippos and other amazing animals that she lives with out in the African bushveld.

The Book Launch

Last week I was lucky enough to attend the book launch on zoom, where we were lucky enough to hear the backstory behind the book and more than that, loads of interesting facts and anecdotes from Karen’s life. You can watch a recording of the book launch on Youtube below.

Wonderful stories, and pages of photographs to get to know all the animals better. There are so many heroes in this book and stories that will delight and despair you all in one chapter. This is a great read and would make a great addition to any animal lover’s library. My absolute favourite character in the story has to be the Mongoose in a tea cup…

If you are looking for a safari in Africa, but you can’t get away from it all right now, then this book will inspire you. Nothing like a little armchair travel to get you up and out the door. And if you can’t get out the door, at least take a look at the great work they are doing at The Turgwe Hippo Trust. Where you can actually adopt a baby hippo. You can definitely put that on your bucket list!!!
