This week’s book stack is a pile of lovely reads from Lapa Publishers. All of them are excellent reads and a great addition to any home library. I especially love the Tantes from Atlantis, there are a lot of quirky South Africanisms tucked within those pages.

Introducing Limericks to the younger set, these are perfect for Afrikaans reading in your homeschool or classroom: “A limerick a day keeps boredom at bay.” A Limerick is a clever five lined, rhyming poem, invented by the poet Edward Lear in the 1870s. These poems introduce a person or place, and tell you a little bit about them, and then the last line often has a very funny or naughty twist.
The trick to enjoying limericks is to read one or two at a time and then leave it a day. They need to be read out loud so that you can hear the rhythm. If you read them all at once, you will quickly loose he charm, limericks need to be savoured!!!
This collection of extremely funny limericks is perfect reading for South African children and their adults… loads of lovely South Africanisms are scattered through the pages, this is a wonderful book for a light-hearted look at Afrikaans.
Te Poenankies vir Woorde
Where were books like this when I was at school, it is a colouring book filled with Afrikaans idioms all about love and their meanings.
There is everything to love about the pages in this book, large spreads, ready for colouring, lots of different types of creativity, ready for learning.
Lisa Liefbesie se Sewe Verlore Kolle
A delightful picture book set in the countryside, loads of farm animals to enjoy on every spread and of course our lead character is Lisa Ladybird and it is her birthday. Lisa is just a little bit proud of her appearance, she is celebrating with her farmyard friends she notices that she suddenly notices that her black dots have vanished. She is quite convinced that all her friends have taken her beautiful spots and this idea is really not a friendship builder…
It turns out it was a silly mistake and Lisa has to say sorry to all her friends. This is a sweet story about friendship and forgiveness and very worthwhile read!!!
Springbokaroo
Nothing better than a local is lekker, bright and full colour, easy reader. An inspiring story for youngsters, by the prolific Fanie Viljoen. It is a story about the wild animals of the African plains and their day-to-day adventures. The hero of the story is a young springbok, and his friends call him Bookaroo, because he absolutely loves reading… the more he tries to share his love of reading with his animal friends, the more they try to avoid him.
A lot of bright and colourful illustrations and a wild adventure… and of course, all is well that ends well. This is a book that promotes reading to young readers and is just a joyful celebration of friendship and adventure amongst Bookaroo and his wild animal friends.
Ouma Mollie se Verkeerder Verjaarsdag
Another stunning full colour easy reader from Fanie Viljoen. Ouma Mollie lives in Seahorse Bay, and Nina, a local child and her dog like to visit her after school… she is a bit of an unintentional and silly trickster, for example, she paints a whale on her house and then drills a hole in the wall to look at the world through the whale’s eye, rather than looking through the window… delightfully for funny for beginner chapter book readers!!!
Anyway, Ouma Mollie sees on her calendar that it is her birthday and she and Nina head to the local beach cafe to celebrate with Lemon Meringue Tart and milkshakes. It is disastrous… so they decide to have another celebration… this is lovely light book. It is fun, a little adventurous and a great read.
Vuil Ferdie
Vuil Ferdie is a boy who is a bit of a disaster… he has terrible manners and accidents seem to happen to him. In each of these books there are three easy reading stories. Each book is split into three stories, and each story has about four chapters… so a chapter a night, makes it the perfect reading book… the stories funny and boistrous and well illustrated throughout, no one will be bored reading these:
- Tande: Ferdie’s unfortunate trip to the dentist…
- Zoem: Is about Ferdie’s family holiday abroad, let’s just say Ferdie’s parents may have had traveling regrets and never want to take a flight with a young Ferdie again.
- Sjoe: The final story is about poor Ferdie, unable to endure the heat of summer, he manages to escape from school to buy an ice-cream, but he quickly encounters a real adventure… when he can’t get back into the classroom after breaktime.
