I spent a wintry afternoon at the Zeitz MOCAA, and I loved it!!!

Winter Holiday Program
First things first, did you know that the Zeitz MOCAA has a school holiday programme…

Get onto their mailing list so that you can hear more about their events…

They have a team of energetic artists, cutting and snipping and preparing…

There is shiny stuff… all ready for fun…

And glittery surprises…

And Extremely Arty things…

I tell you, if there was a holiday club for adults, I would be the very first person to join in.
The Matric Art Exhibition
The actual reason that I went to the The Gallery was because I had heard about the matric exhibition. Honestly, I was blown away by the brilliance, the matric exhibition is on in the basement, until the end of August, and it is a MUST visit…

AREA CODES: AGAINST THE GRAIN – 2025 MATRIC EXHIBITION
Where do you Stay?
Where are you from?
To be honest, I have never given my area code a thought, but these young learners really have. They have created artworks from items they found in the neighbourhoods, treasures they have saved from walks, and artefacts that bring their memories to life. Each art piece tells a particular story of a neighbourhood, and you get to see the whole process: from their rough works and design ideas, even their inspiration is on display. Next to each artwork is the back story and the depth of understanding that went into the work and their personal journeys and their unique presentations of their ideas, was just incredible.

The key is in all the details…

So many tiny details…

Every artwork was reflection of the artist and their experience in their community.

Places around Cape Town, that have a completely different feel and experience for different people living there.

I loved reading their back stories…

This is a very immersive exhibition…

I loved the depth of each artwork.

I love that you could find inspiration for their chosen representation of their area code, around the gallery…

And the background to the artwork presented clearly…

The best thing about this art exhibition is that it got me thinking, not only about these students, where they have grown up and their personal struggles, not to mention their generational struggles. This exhibition got me thinking about where I grew up, how would I represent ALL the area codes that I have lived in… what artefacts would I choose to represent my childhood, my student days, my house full of little kids days? Suddenly there is a lot more to an area code than meets the eye. This exhibition is vibrant, thought provoking and inspiring. To be sure, I will be back to take another walk through before Cape town winter turns to spring.

Thanks to the Zeitz MOCAA for another excellent visit…
