Thrilled to have a manageable handbook for beach excursions, geared specifically for South African shores. This is a full-colour, picture-rich guide to the South African coast. It is a wonderful guide to what you can find, with so many interesting details presented in an easy to understand way. Not to mention, QR codes linking to back stories on YouTube providing more details. There is a lot to love between these pages, and it is a fabulous addition to any local, natural factual book stack.
Explore the Shore
I have blogged about Explore the Shore before, because we love their video channel on YouTube. I was beyond excited when I heard that they had brought out a book. Their book (and video channel on you tube) is mostly about sea creatures that can be found along the South African shorleine. They also set the scene really well with a great introductory section on rock pools, the intertidal zones, different types of beaches and they have the very best video I have seen on describing tides.
Every double page spread describes a different seaside feature or a specific animal, and there is a QR code linking to the corresponding video on their Youtube channel.
The book is visually so appealing, packed with full colour photographs and interesting blocks of information, not to mentions short, snappy and readable paragraphs.
The pages are packed with interesting facts and snippets of information that will provide you with loads of “Did you know?” tips and tricks. This is the perfect book for ocean lovers of all ages to enjoy.
Perfect to pop into a beach basket or backpack for beach adventures… and brilliant for just reading and learning about our shore and knowing so much more, when you head out.

Charles Griffiths is an Emeritus Professor and expert on South African invertebrates, from the University of Cape Town. He is the author of several books. Matthew Griffiths is a film and content creator. Together they are incredibly curious about all things to do with the ocean, and can be found on instagram at Explore the Shore.
