Weeks ago, and I mean weeks ago we mentioned that we had been gifted:
When we had just two kids we took a wintry pilgrimage to show our children the snow – it is a mad South African Ritual – trust me on this… You drive and drive and drive to the mountains then you climb and climb the mountain passes and, all the while freezing to death, point out the snow on the distant peaks. Well the particular winter of our pilgrimage there was actual snow within walking distance of the car… walking being a euphemism for a “bit of a hike.” Needless to say Hood #2 was so wrapped up against the inclemancy that he slept right through it. And Hood #1 took one look at those little tiny flakes and said – it is just too cold and wouldn’t get out of the car. That sums up our total snow experience. Gripping isn’t it!!!
After weeks of me being in awe and wonder at the snow you all had over the past winter and I get bemoaning the fact that we (and I mean the kids) had never seen snow. We were gifted… Our friends over at Core Foundations sent us a package…
Great excitement – a box of snow!!!
So I put it out of harms way and forgot about it!!! Well yesterday there was a break in the rain – and I knew this was an outdoor project!!! Out we dashed… everything neat and tidy and dare I say: Scientific!!!
Just a little mind you…
And a dash of water…
And a dash more…
And some very tentative touching – and “But it doesn’t feel cold?”…
And a little caution…
And then we got the hang of it…
And into the swing – and jug’s of water…
And mountains of it!!!
And heady joy!!! And snow fights and marvelous fun!!!
If you must know its a polymer like the stuff they put into disposable diapers… and you know what that’s like when you put it in the washer by mistake… a snow storm right!!! Only this is a bit dryer and swells enormously – far more than any kid I have ever seen in a disposable nappy!!! So similar, but different!!! Now if you are very scientific in nature then go ahead and read the Insta Snow FAQ.
We did get inventive and tried out different colors…
Doesn’t this look cool!!!
And for all the snow fun we had we still have a heap of snow left over like 95% of the bag is left over after all the fun we had!!!
But I called it a day when they wanted to see if what would happen if we put the whole bag in the pool… I didn’t want to explain those experimental results to “the father person.” So it’s safe in its bag (last time I looked) until next time!!!
I can definitely handle snow like this, the thought of kitting out all my kids in snow gear is pretty terrifying… but snow in a bag I can handle!!! Thanks guys on the far side of the world – that was a whole lot of fun!!!
Looks great fun!
I’m glad you all had a blast!
My sons were enthralled with your pictures, but it took some doing explaining to the younger two that it was NOT real snow. They were wanting to get a bag for themselves so they could eat snow whenever they wanted. . .(BLECH!)
Hay C, Finally we got around to it and was it ever fun!!! I second you on the bleh factor!!! Bleh, double bleh!!! I hope your dramatic weekend is going well!!!
