Our book of the week:

We are mad fans of Shirley Hughes, how many cups of tea have we had around our dinner table… on account of all her wonderful Alfie stories… So when we heard she was writing a novel we just couldn’t wait to read it. This book is set in Florence, Italy, at the close of World War II, and the coming of age of a young boy whose life becomes transformed in a couple of chapters from a boy to a man. Of course with a heap of teens and preteens in our house, who all think they are practically adults, everyone was intrigued about this young man and the steps he took into manhood and the sensible older sister who had a handful of soldiers from either side showing that love really does count for more than sides even in a war. We started off well-disciplined with a chapter a night after dinner… but within three days we had to put a day on hold and follow a wintry patch of sun around the house as we read it from cover to cover. We loved it, every page of it… We loved the real emotions of the “players” and we loved the twists and turn of fate. It wasn’t your typical sweet Shirley Hughes, it had a real bite to it… and as my kids said – it didn’t end with a cup of tea!!! Lovely to see a book that the author obviously had on her heart to write and did she write it well… gripping tension, you can’t get time to move fast enough to get on with the story, and then she slows the story down for afternoon siestas and it kills you… trying to get the book to get on with it!! It was a real but not terrifying picture of war and would be a great war story to read with your kids. You can take a look at the book’s website – everything about it is fabulous!!! We would rate this book as a very definite keeper!!! Very grateful to PanMacMillan South Africa for a copy of this book to review.
