Edible Book Fun: The Owl and The Pussy Cat, Harold and the Purple Crayon…

When our friends over at Playing by the Book announced their Annual Edible Book Competition… we just knew we had to join in!!!

And just like our entry for last year it literally took us weeks to think of an idea that we could all agree on. And I tell you the truth the more of you there are, the harder it is to come up with an idea. We decided on one sweet and one savoury book.

The Owl and the Pussy Cat

The savoury book we try and create a meal that belongs to the culture of the story – last year we had a tiger in the heart of the Indian Jungles… and we created him with curry. This year we chose “The Owl and the Pussy Cat” and bangers and mash, with mushy peas was the chosen dish…

We added in some corn stars and a egg yolk moon. Broccoli bon bon trees and olive’s for eyes… artistic license and all that… and here is the result of some tweaking on the plate…

The nicest looking lunch my kids have ever had!!!

Harold and the Purple Crayon

When it came to a sweet choice… oh my word so many decisions!!! But we decided to keep it simple and look for a book that nearly everyone, the world over, would know about. We used a block of ice-cream cut in half, to make it look like the pages of a book.

And we had to figure out how to do the icing… using a ziplock bag. It is not nearly as easy as it looks, until you make the icing much runnier than usual. The other problem was that as soon as the icing settled on the ice-cream it freezes solid. And so some of our buildings turned out really wonky!!! But we decided Harold may have had a bit of wonkiness with his crayon as well!!!

And now we needed a Harold… but have you ever tried to cut a cookie… it is a shattering experience!!! So we came up with the ingenious plan of making the cookie a little bit damp first. As long the cookie was a little damp we could work with it and create a little Harold.

We put it all together and we had… Harold with his Purple Crayon…

That was fun and feasty…

  1. Thank you, Carolyn… Some books just stand out as so memorable!!! Harold and the Purple Crayon is a great book to have as a favourite!!! Hope you have a fantastic weekend!!!

  2. I loved both of these so much. Such finesse in the owl and the pussy cat, and who wouldn’t want to eat an icecream based edible book. Just brilliant. Thank you so much for taking part!

  3. That is amazing! We loved reading Harold as part of our sonlight preschool this year. By the way, do you mainly use sonlight for teaching phonics and reading or do you have other resources?

  4. These are so cute! You would enjoy Jan Brett’s The Owl and the Pussycat. It is set in the Caribbean, so we have fun spotting our favourite fruits and flowers and even money. Her books are full of things to look at.

  5. Oh Zoe – Thank You for another fabulous competition… really you do so much for kids and books and reading… can’t thank you enough for all your enthusiasm!!!

  6. Oh Sharlene, We haven’t seen Jan Brett’s version but we love her books… going to have to look out for that!!! Hope you are having a great weekend!!!

  7. Hi Sherrin, So glad you are enjoying your pre-school year of Sonlight!!! I do do the Sonlight Language arts with my kids but in the pre-school and the early grades I am VERY relaxed. There is plenty of time for serious study later… we do use the 100 Lessons with our kids but we take forever to do it… at least a year!!! I did write a post on reading resources a while back and you may find some help there. All the best on your learning journey…

  8. Holy cuteness!!!!! I just
LOve them both…. Each dish has such personality and charm!

  9. Yes, I agree about being relaxed. We have to be at the moment with all the toddler and baby interruptions. Thanks for sharing what you do.
