It has been an absolute age since we have blogged about anything that we have made… not that we haven’t been making, just that we haven’t gotten round to posting it. Recently the gang had to put together a model of the ocean zones in a box. It was a great project that they could all work on together… fun times.

Step by Step to Ocean Zones in a Box

We began with an empty box…

And colored paper for each of the four light zones: the sunlit zone, the twilight zone, the midnight zone and the abyssal zone.

Layers in…

Geography: The continental shelf, the continental rise, The abyssal plain, the ocean trench and so on…

They filled in the layers of the earth with crumpled packing papers… you could use paper mache, but patience is not our virtue.

Pegged it into position…

And left it to dry for the afternoon…

While it was drying there was a frenzy of everyone drawing ocean creatures…

Followed by snipping, labelling, sticking…

Some papery kelp and some shy sharks…

And some details…

And done…

And the best part about it, other than that it is sturdy enough to play with and there has been a lot of adding and subtracting to the project since they “finished,” is that you can just pop the lid on the box and keep it on a shelf out of harms way when they aren’t busy with it.

That is such a fun project!
Yes, this is super project!
Thanks Zoe, we had a lot of fun making it!!! Hope you all have a fun weekend!!!

I absolutely love this website and would like to use this in my marine biology classroom as an extension activity for students. How do I go about getting permission to use this content?
