Spring is Rebellious
Spring is Rebellious is a collection of art and culture, that the social activist Albie Sachs has accumulated over his intriguing life. It is an accumulation of intertwining artefacts, of art and writing, culture and memory, curated over his lifetime. The Exhibition is a tribute to Albie Sachs, and as he gave details and stories from his time as a young man in solitary confinement, to meeting artists on the streets of Maputo, he exuded a positive energy, a dynamic force that could only come from the heart of a freedom fighter and social justice advocate.

The Life of Albie Sachs
Part of the Spring is Rebellious Collection includes a timeline, showing his life and times. He is a social activist, writer and former judge of the Constitutional Court. He was born in 1935, and raised in Cape Town. By the age of 21 he was an advocate working at the Bar, representing folk charged under apartheid laws.

In 1966 he left South Africa in exile, and travelled to England, where he completed his PhD. In 1977 he moved to Maputo, Mozambique, where he embraced the art culture of the region.

In 1988 he was the victim of a car bomb, planted by South African security agents. After the bomb, where he lost the use of one eye, and an arm, he devoted his life to a New South Africa.

And with this art collection, he hopes connect and heal the divided societies on the subcontinent, as a celebration of his 90th birthday.

One thing the Zeitz MOCAA does well is a grand opening, and the opening of the exhibition was nothing short of spectacular. With artists and lovers of art gathering to celebrate, not only the life of Albie Sachs and his incredible and insightful collection, but the lifetime of work that this man has applied to making a difference and cultural transformation.
