I know I have posted about this before but it is a tradition!!! Once a year fourteen thousand runners don their shoes and take a fifty-six kilometer run down one side of the Cape Peninsula and when they get a far as our house they turn around and run up the other side. I kid you not: They turn around at our house. Here you go… thousands of runners, as far as the eye can see…
Headed down the Peninsula towards our house…
Trudging, jogging, shuffling, sprinting, whatever… Down they come and then they turn the corner…
Around the bend…
By the thousand…
There we are with friends and neighbors…
And our alarm clock… (because every family must have one!!!)
And there the go the runners…
Off up the Peninsula again…
Onwards and upwards…
First just the one…
And he is flying, I tell you flying…
And I would be too if I had these guys pounding the road just behind me…
They are after him, seriously…
And everyone knows who they are… the lead ladies and the associated pack… see we really were there…
And we were cheering them on and on…
Seriously runners as far as the eye can see…
They just kept on coming…
In all shapes and sizes…
Just like the spectators…
Some more fleet footed than others…
And then they were gone and the shuffle of feet was over for another year, we went indoors for coffee because I have to say runners do get up alarmingly early, which is why I stayed firmly behind the camera, and then they merrily head out and run fifty six kilometers. I am so glad I just had to step out the front door to see the event.
And I guess all those running shoes have been put away until next year when we will again get up at the crack of dawn and more than a few thousand runners will be running down the Cape Peninsula, just as far as our house before they turn around and head back home again.
Until next year then…
What fun! Running here in the states has really come back into vogue. Years ago, marathons were smaller and now – wow! So many runners! I haven’t watched a long run in some time, but all these pictures gets me all excited again! Thanks for sharing!
Hay Sally, The Two Oceans is quite honestly one of the most beautiful races in the world… down through False Bay with the ocean to the side… And then back up past the ocean on the other side – really beautiful and crowds the whole way supporting the runners… a very fun day for the whole city.
