Sunday Snippet: God’s Alphabet for Life – A GiveAway…

This past week I gathered up a pile of new books to GiveAway in our Sunday Snippets and I am loving them… Definitely time to get back into our regular GiveAway rhythm routine and the first book we are taking a look at is God’s Alphabet for Life: Devotions for Young Children by Joel R. Beeke and Heidi Boorsma:

I am often on about the importance of family bible devotions… and so often readers ask for good resources that they can work through with their kids. Well this is one of those fabulous resources. It is a book for families to read together, aimed at the younger set and certainly my younger kids would find this a wonderful resource.

The book follows the twenty six letters of the alphabet, with a new verse to consider in each chapter… beginning with “Ask and it should be given you.” (Matthew 7:7) and ending with “Zion heard and was glad.” (Psalm97:8). Each chapter begins with a bible verse to memorise and think about over time and a short and easy to read lesson. It has bright, fun photographs throughout and the chapters are only about two or three pages long. The point is to read through the passage and then discuss what you have read with your children. You can take a peak at pdf sample pages of the book at this link.

This book is so encouraging, my children know Psalm 119:11 I have hidden the word in my heart that I might not sin against you. The introduction goes a little further than saying: “learn the verses…” encouraging the young learners to understand the verse, through the story they write, because words that are learnt with understanding are so much more than just words. Once you have mastered the learning, trust those words, they are treasures stored safely in our hearts…

I have always claimed that I just cannot memorise memory verses, but a book like this one is actually very enabling. The verses to learn are short and manageable, not to mention they have an alphabetical clue as well. Honestly, I remember bible verses that I have learnt with my children far better than I remember those I have tried to learn on my own. I have to say their is nothing like teaching your children something, to learn it yourself. And you may find that this book contains a lot of truth and hidden depths, a resource just as valuable for the parents, as the children, in your family as you work through it together.
