When I started swimming a couple of years back, the only big swim I had heard of was the Robben Island Crossing… but wait there are so many more!!! And one I have been dreaming about since the very beginning was a False Bay Crossing…

RelaytheBay

It is a 33km swim from Miller’s Point, in Simonstown, to Rooiels on the far side of False Bay… that swim is still too big for me, but together with a team… we are going to relay our way across the bay.

Three moms swimming across the bay, to support the I AM Water Foundation. The I AM Water Foundation is an organisation that takes children from the greater Cape Town area, that wouldn’t otherwise have an ocean experience, and give them an ocean workshop… where they get to learn about our local rocky shores, they get to understand conservation, they get to actively participate in citizen science. It is a lifechanging experience for these youngsters and opens up a whole world of ocean wonder and science to them.

Meanwhile, it has been months of planning and a lot of chatting with folk who have relayed before us, from the CLDSA – Cape Long Distance Swimming Association, with tips on what to pack, what to wear and what to think about on the day.

Loads of ocean swimming with Cape Town Swim. Right through winter and all that the Cape of Storms could send for us. It was a fairly hectic winter, and I could only have done all the ocean swimming with a team of brave Cape Town swimmers beside me.

Also, a lot of coaching with Oceanfit. Everything from stroke correction to seriously speedy sets, anything to get moving smoother and faster through the water.

And now we are in the final stages… bags are half packed and we are waiting for the weather to play along… so far Cape Town summer has arrived with full south easterly strength and the wind has been blowing continuously… the ocean has been great for wind sports, but not for swimming the bay!!!

Any day now we will get the call from Big Bay Events, and we will know it is time to swim. In the meantime… please take a look at our Given Gain page and help us to raise funds for the I AM Water.
