Saturday Spot: Groot Constantia and a Hearty Hunt…

So we decided to go on a picnic to Groot Constantia, since we haven’t got round to it in ages and it is one of our favorite spots. There is a perfect picnic spot in Cape Town! Have a look at these rolling lawns and views as far as the eye can see.

Little smidgens of wildlife and vineyards for ever…

Admittedly, the last time we stopped by there there had been a troop of baboons playing havoc with the picnickers and hence the long gap between visits as the mother person gathers her heart from her feet and braves the spot again.

So folks, this is Groot Constantia, a stunning spot in the Constantia Valley. It is a 350 year old Cape Dutch wine farm in the middle of the Cape Peninsula and just the perfect spot for a picnic – we thought!

In the past when we have been, the rolling lawns have been packed with people having lazy picnics and folk playing ball games and kids running and playing – but today the lawns were strangely empty. Needless to say those big white boards are up and say that you may picnic on the grass if you have bought a picnic from the restaurant. The thought of digging out the coffers for a wine farm priced picnic for nine of us subdued our spirits somewhat and we went for an amble instead.

Anyway, we felt a bit like the Berenstein Bears on their Picnic and went home and had our picnic round the lunch table… needless to say we need to find another beautiful picnic spot…

In the meanwhile we went on a hearty hunt to lift those very subdued spirits. Inspired by one of my favorite craft books ever:

This book is packed with the most beautiful and inspiring hearts: paper mache, beads, dried flowers, lavender even baked hearts. The challenge was set – go and hide as many hearts as you can and low and behold we had a fun afternoon searching for little hearts that were sneaking up around the house!

That’s it. And we are off to brainstorm another Best Picnic Spot Ever.
